What We Know About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who are known at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
