Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Venus said. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
