A group of six unlikely but brave kids encounter the way of a vast and dreadful paranormal darkness that has infiltrated our existence from the farthest reaches of shadow. They are compelled to devote their lives battling it, experiencing horror after horror in the ordeal.

A Resonant Plot with a Fresh Approach

This is the plot, in essence, of Stephen King’s novel It (his best; no debate). It is also the plot of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s latest horror doorstopper, in which a close-knit group invoke the age-old, utterly malevolent dragon the Sorrowful Monarch from the Endless Night to help them defeat some antagonists. Needless to say, their otherworldly invocation backfires.

Embracing a Family Lineage

Joseph Hillström King began his writing journey striving diligently to remain separate from his renowned parent, adopting the nom de plume he still uses today and eschewing in-person meetings with his agent (he bears a striking resemblance to his parent). But in this latest novel, he embraces it. Certain passages that consciously reflect some of King’s most famous (that classic opening line); a incident that evokes a signature King element (a battle of wits). In this whopper of a novel, Hill is delighting in his lineage, and readers share in the joy.

The Cast of the Protagonists

Back to those friends: five of them are scholars at the imagined this academic setting in Maine. There’s Arthur, bookish and intelligent, solving Old English riddles in his free moments; Colin, wealthy, astute, and known for crushing obstacles in his path; the twin siblings; the beautiful Allie. And there’s Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but assumes a vital role of their group as they toy, somewhat credulous, partly skeptical, in the occult.

The Pivotal Ritual

Our hero becomes, as a result of external pressures, compelled to pilfer valuable volumes from his treasured institution’s archives by a bunch of local criminals. This wounds his academic spirit, particularly as he’s compelled to seize the institution’s prized and chilling publication: the diary of adept the historical figure (put to death “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the binding is fashioned from his hide). Our Scooby gang examine the log, learn they can invoke what Crane describes as a clever snake to aid our hero with his extortion dilemma – and occupy the subsequent narrative facing the fallout. The dragon will undoubtedly remove those troublesome local drug dealers, but they’ll have to choose a fresh offering annually or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As our protagonist states: “You sow dragon’s teeth, all you get is additional horrors.”

Narrative Fluidity and Inventive Range

Spanning forty years, the author shifts with natural fluency between genres: as the allies attempt to deal with the circumstances they find themselves in by, through diverse methods, choosing undeniably wicked targets to sacrifice, or hunting down ways to slay the beast themselves, we move between suspense to grim fantasy, covert operations to affectionate subplot to horror. One particularly memorable shift was to a heroic journey, far beneath the surface below Cornwall, a section sprinkled with the Lord of the Rings author that was wonderfully frightening.

An Expansive Mosaic of Dread and Optimism

There are trolls – the classic variety and digital trolls, truly terrifying and superbly depicted. We see enchanted blades and betrayals, heart-stopping scenes of valor and ones of terrible wickedness, both mortal and supernatural. It stands as a masterpiece: a frightening tale that is primarily a tribute to the human inventiveness, and to love and friendship. “We needed a story to believe and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the allies assemble around a surface, getting ready to invoke their serpent into existence with the force of their minds.
