The direst potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C rise in mean temperatures to a two-metre rise in ocean levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and power requirements.

Credible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, a number of which are associated with climate tipping points, are viewed as low probability but credible. The researchers explained that these projections addressed a shortfall in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.

"The climate extremes we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are possible," said Nigel Arnell who led the analysis. "Britain has been planning without the tools to test against extreme possibilities. We've now supplied planners what they need to prepare for environmental results they hope never happen, but can’t afford to ignore."

A further series of dire projections maps the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that temperatures could soar in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be three times standard measurements.

The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes happening could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what action will be enacted to tackle global warming and how the climate system will behave. This research was compared to defence planning or scenario planning for financial systems.

The project was commissioned as part of a official adaptation planning initiative. Independent analyses have cautioned that not enough attention was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and assess the threats for severe warming. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "insufficient" by environmental groups.

An official statement noted: "Global warming is at the center of the country's focus, both building resilience and establishing itself as a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
