British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
