There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

This past week the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration declined to provide any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar claiming the president had pressured him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines the way it is," he stated.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, indicating that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the recognition of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of reports that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had forced Russia to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "strong investment" in international relations", he remarked.
