Last year, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, may align so closely with the carefully constructed version circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” the nation from chaos. While he is called Mikhail, the implication is unmistakable: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, Putin is shown as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, these events took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a selection process with no shortage of candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country de facto.

• His list featured several politicians, among them a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who studied his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer familiar with the events stated the key criterion was controllability and faithfulness, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the image of him as a powerful KGB spy was built after the fact. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. In essence, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in field operations.

Interestingly, the move to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by the actor's arrival as James Bond. His harder version led Russian media and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters replacing Craig’s face with his surfaced on Moscow streets, fueling the growing tendency to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it might seek to question.
